Last night, the New York Sportimes opened their 2011 World TeamTennis season with a 21-16 victory over the Boston Lobsters. The matchup was tightly contested throughout and ended up coming down to the last match of the evening which was the women’s doubles match. The Sportimes led 16-15 in the overall score going into the final matchup, and their duo of Martina Hingis & Abigail Spears finished off the team of Coco Vandeweghe & Mashona Washington for the 5-1 win.

Earlier in the night, the Sportimes got things started right as Jesse Witten & Greg Jones defeated Eric Butorac & Jan Micheal Gambill 5-3 to give the Sportimes the early lead. Next up was Sportimes star player and former world number one Martina Hingis who defeated Coco Vandeweghe 5-2, giving the Sportimes a 10-5 overall lead. The Lobsters responded by winning the next two matchups. First, Jan Michael Gambill defeated Jesse Witten 5-3 and then in mixed-doubles, Eric Butorac & Coco Vandeweghe defeated Martina Hingis & Greg Jones, 5-3. This closed the match at 16-15 Sportimes in favor of the Sportimes, before they finished things off with the win in women’s doubles.

It was also Junior TeamTennis Night at Sportime Randalls Island. Before the professional matches, a Junior Team Tennis clinic was held as USTA junior players were brought in to play on the courts of Sportime Stadium prior to the matches. The kids were also given a complimentary ticket to the matches. USTA Eastern/Metro Region was also on hand, offering complimentary tennis rackets and other gift items to those who renewed or signed-up for a USTA membership.

The World TeamTennis format promotes a fan-friendly environment similar to the Davis Cup, indicated by the great atmosphere at the matches. Prior to the matches, there was a concert in the courtyard featuring local pop singer Tiffany Giardina, along with different tables with prizes and giveaways. Reps from both Long Island Tennis Magazine and New York Tennis Magazine were also on hand at the event distributing free copies of their publication.

The next home match for the Sportimes will be Monday, July 11 when the Sportimes host the St. Louis Aces. Hingis will again lead the Sportimes on the court as she will face an old nemesis, Anna Kournikova of the Aces.
