It took two days of starting and stopping play, but the third seeded Maria Sharapova advanced to a 2012 U.S. Open semifinal matchup with Victoria Azarenka on Wednesday, overcoming a slow start against France’s Marion Bartoli where she fell behind 0-4 yesterday before rain halted play. Today, when play resumed, Bartoli took the first set 6-3, before Sharapova fought back capturing the final two sets 6-3, 6-4. In the third set, Sharapova broke Bartoli twice and only lost serve once herself and held on for the win.

However, Bartoli broke back instantly to level the set at 2-2. Sharapova then saved two break points to hold for 3-3 before a final break allowed her to serve out the contest 6-4.

Sharapova will meet the top-seeded Azarekna on Friday for a shot at the 2012 U.S. Open finals.

Also after play resumed on Wednesday, Italy’s Sara Errani beat good friend and doubles partner Roberta Vinci to reach the semifinals at the U.S. Open. Errani won relatively easily on Louis Armstrong Stadium Court in straight sets 6-2, 6-4. Errani became the first Italian woman to reach the semifinals of the U.S. Open since 1968. Errani and Vinci, who won a French Open women’s doubles title this year, will play together in the 2012 U.S. Open women’s doubles semis against either Spain’s Nuria Llagostera Vives & Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez or Russians Maria Kirilenko & Nadia Petrova.
