Virginia and Stanford Win NCAA Championships

On May 21, the Virginia Cavaliers took home the 2013 NCAA Men’s Tennis Championship, while the Stanford Cardinals seized the NCAA Women’s title. The Cavaliers (30-0) defeated the UCLA Bruins 4-3, finally taking the next step after falling short as the runner-up the past two years. The Cardinals (22-4) knocked off the Texas A&M Aggies, 4-3, marking Stanford’s 17th national championship.

Mitchell Frank wrapped up the victory for Virginia, defeating Adrien Puget 0-6, 6-4, 7-5. On match point, Puget was called for touching the net, losing the point and ultimately the match. The call prevented UCLA from winning what would have been their 17th NCAA title. The most outstanding player award went to Jarmere Jenkins of Virginia, after he defeated Dennis Novikov 7-6, 6-3, at number one singles. Justin Shane took the other singles win for Virginia, beating Clay Thompson 6-2, 6-2. The Bruins won the other three singles matches as UCLA’s Marcos Giron defeated Alex Domijan, nationally ranked number two player, with a 6-4, 6-4 win. Dennis Mkrtchian defeated Mac Styslinger 6-4, 6-3, and Karue Sll beat Jeulen Uriguen 4-6, 6-3, 6-2. In doubles, the Cavaliers won both matches as the duo of Shane & Uriguen overpowered UCLA’s Brighman and Thompson, 8-5 and Virginia’s Jenkins and Stylinger took the other doubles win, 8-2, over Giron and Novikov.

With Kristie Ahn back in the lineup after missing parts of the last two seasons, 12th-seeded Stanford was a different team.Before defeating Texas A&M to win the Championship, Stanford beat fourth-seeded Georgia and fifth-seeded USC along the way. They also stopped Florida from winning what would have been their fourth consecutive championship. Kristine Ahn led the way for Stanford in the Finals as she overpowered Cristina Stancu in three sets 7-5, 4-6, 6-2. Ahn had missed parts of the last two seasons due to ankle, foot, and neck injuries, but made an impressive come-back this year. Stanford’s other singles victories were won by Nicole Gibbs and Stacey Tan. Gibbs defeated Cristina Sanchez-Quintanar 0-6, 6-2, 6-0, and Tan downed Ines Deheza 7-5, 6-3. Stanford also earned two doubles points over Texas A&M as Stacy Tan and Ellen Tsay won 8-4, then Dillon and Hardebeck won their match 8-5. In defeat the Aggies still took home three singles victories in the school’s first appearance in the championship match. Anna Mamalat defeated Tsay 6-1, 7-5. Nazari Urbina surfaced as the next victor against Kristina Hardebeck 6-3, 7-6. Finally, Stefania Hristov beat Natalie Dillon 6-2, 3-6, 6-1.
