A Mayor’s Life: Governing New York’s Gorgeous Mosaic, the title of the recently-released memoir of former New York City Mayor David N. Dinkins, written with Peter Knobler, may well describe the microcosm of New York City that has joined together to honor the Mayor for his contributions to tennis in the Big Apple. The David Dinkins Tennis Club (DDTC) and the Harlem Cultural Archives (HCA), two non-profits working to restore luster in Harlem, among the city’s most diverse populations and landscapes, have united to co-sponsor a tribute and book-signing for Dinkins on Friday, Nov. 22 from 6:00 p.m.-9:00 p.m. at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

The mayoral tribute will consist of a brief discussion with Mr. Dinkins about his book and a Q&A session between the Mayor and the audience. This free event, open to tennis players and the general public, will have a tennis theme and will cite some of the Mayor’s work as a proponent for the National Tennis Center, the U.S. Open and diversity in the sport that Dinkins still loves and plays at the age of 86.

Refreshments will be served following the formal presentation and signed copies of the Mayor’s book will be available for purchase. Tennis players and friends will gather for the tribute inside the indoor tennis courts near the main entrance gate at the National Tennis Center on Flushing Meadows Corona Park Road. Seating is limited and attendees are asked to RSVP by Tuesday, Nov.12, by e-mailing DDTCevents@yahoo.com or by calling (551) 200-3239 and leaving an e-mail or voice-mail message with the number of people attending.

DDTC, a four-year-old tennis club that is based at Fred Johnson Park, took the Mayor’s name to honor and mirror his tennis and community achievements. HCA is a historical society, chartered by the New York Board of Regents, to collect and preserve Harlem’s contributions to the global society.
