Serena Williams exacted revenge for her embarrassing loss to Simona Halep earlier in the week by defeating the Romanian 6-3, 6-0 in Singapore to win her third straight WTA Finals. Serena suffered her worst loss in 16 years to Halep in the second round of the WTA Finals’ round-robin stage from Singapore. She won just two games in that match, but seized the opportunity to play the young Halep again, forcing up a bagel in the second set which lasted just 25 minutes.

“I just started training again last week because I had such a bad knee in Beijing,” said Serena, who had been hurting coming into the tournament. “I can’t believe I even made it to Singapore, and now I have the Billie Jean King Trophy, so I’m just really excited.”

Serena won 11 of the match’s final 12 games, holding Halep to just seven points in the final frame.

Early on, it looked as if we might see a repeat of the match earlier in the week between the two. Halep notched the first break of the match early in the first, and was up 40-0 on her serve in the next game. Serena, knowing she could not get off to the start she did in their previous meeting, forced a deuce in that game and broke right back.

Although Serena would go on to win the set 6-3, the opening frame was not that lopsided. The American won just three more points than the Romanian in the set, but proved to be overmatched as the contest headed into the second.

“I was nervous before the match that I had to play this big final. I couldn’t manage very well the situation,” said Halep. “I knew that she would be more motivated during this match because we played a few days ago and I won.”

Serena’s serve was much sharper in this one, converting 77 percent of her first serves into points. In contrast, Halep’s converted her first serve less than 50 percent of the time. She didn’t have a single winner in the final set.

The match was the most lopsided WTA Finals championship since Kim Clijsters knocked off Amelie Mauresmo 6-2, 6-0 in 2003.

Despite the loss, Halep has enjoyed a remarkable last year and a half. She has sky rocketed from number 64 to number four in the world rankings, drawing a compliment from Williams.

“She’s making me a better player,” said Serena to the crowd after the match.

Serena finishes the year at number one, for the fourth time in her career, and walks away with $2 million in prize money.

The doubles final from Singapore saw the team of Cara Black & Sania Mirza dispose of defending champions Peng Shuai & Hsieh Su-Wei 6-1, 6-0.
