While many people, including ESPN and the U.S. Open, are disappointed that Serena Williams will not be participating in the women’s singles final on Saturday, the matchup between Italians Flavia Pennetta and Roberta Vinci is an intriguing one, and the two will both be seeking their first career Grand Slam title when they face off later this afternoon.

Vinci pulled off one of the biggest upsets ever on Friday, beating world number one Serena Williams to end the American’s hopes at becoming the first person to win the Calendar Grand Slam since Steffi Graf in 1988.

That victory was the center of attention on Friday, and rightfully so, but what gets lost in the shuffle was just how dominant Italian Flavia Pennetta was in her victory over world number two Simona Halep. She needed less than an hour to get past Halep, and played some really top-level tennis.

So we have an all-Italian final between Vinci and Pennetta. Vinci, 32, and Pennetta, 33, are both playing in their first career Grand Slam final. It is the only the sixth final in the Open Era, and first time at the U.S. Open, that two first-time finalists will meet.

Pennetta leads the all-time series 5-4 against Vinci, but the two haven’t played since the 2013 U.S. Open quarterfinals, a Pennetta victory. The 26th seed Pennetta plays with a little more power than Vinci, but both are incredibly good movers who want to get into long rallies.

Vinci used her backhand slice to force Serena into a lot of errors on Friday, and it will be interesting to see how that strategy works against Pennetta, who showed how good she is moving around the court in her dismantling of Halep in her semifinal.

Either way, we will have a new Grand Slam champion by the end of the day, and it will be a 30-plus year old Italian.

Before the women’s singles final, the men’s doubles final will take place on Arthur Ashe. The eighth-seeded pair of Jamie Murray and John Peers will take on 12th seeds Nicholas Mahut and Pierre-Hugues Herbert.

This is a matchup of Grand Slam finalists from this year. Murray and Peers reached the Wimbledon final while Mahut and Herbert made it to the Australian Open final. Herbert and Mahut lead the head-to-head 1-0, in Netherlands earlier this year.

The American Collegiate Invitational wraps up today as well and UCLA is well-represented. In the men’s final, second-seed Mackenzie McDonald of UCLA will take on second-seed Gonzales Austin of Vanderbilt.

In the women’s final, UCLA’s Robin Anderson will do battle with her Bruins’ teammate Chanelle Van Nguyen.
