Staten Island Tech Wins PSAL Playoff Opener

The first round of the PSAL team playoffs got underway in New York City on Wednesday, and ninth-seeded McKee/Staten Island Tech led the way in the “A” Division, downing the 16 seed, Eleanor Roosevelt, 5-0 to reach the second round.

Top singles player Anastasiya Malinouskaya led the way for the Seagulls, moving past Kathryn Choodnovskiy 10-0 to anchor the victory.

Up next for Staten Island Tech is eighth-seed Hunter.

James Madison pulled off a minor upset in its first round matchup, defeating 11th seed Curtis 5-0 to move on.

Madison will take on sixth-seed Brooklyn Tech next.

The 10th-seeded Susan Wagner moved past 15th seed Leon Goldstein 4-1 to advance. Susan Wagner got a big win from Batool Mulla, who defeated Rebecca MacDonald 10-8 at second singles.

The Falcons of Susan Wagner will take on seventh-seed Tottenville next.

American Studies set up a second round matchup with fifth-seed Francis Lewis, defeating 13th seed Townsend Harris 5-0 on Wednesday.

In the “B” Division, 18th seed New Utrecht upset second-seed Grover Cleveland 4-0 to advance to the quarterfinals.

Up next for New Utrecht seventh-seed East New York Family Academy.

Long Island City also pulled off an upset on Wednesday as it defeated ninth-seed Fort Hamilton 5-0. It will look to continue its run against top seed Springfield, who downed 16th seed Seward Park 5-0 on Wednesday.

In the closest match of the day, 11th seed Columbus upended sixth-seed Maspeth 3-2 to advance to the final eight. Christina Perez snuck out a 10-8 win over Susanna Nitchman at second singles to help push Columbus into the quarterfinals.

Columbus will take on third-seed Lab Museum next. Lab Museum got past 14th seed Hillcrest 5-0 on Wednesday.

Fourth-seed Newcomers was the other victor on Wednesday as it defeated 20th seed Brandeis 5-0 to move into the quarterfinals where it will play the winner of fifth-seed Scholars Academy and RFK.
