Maria Sharapova hung on to beat Simona Halep in a back and forth affair at the WTA Finals in Singapore on Tuesday, eventually outlasting the Romanian 6-4, 6-4 to win the round-robin contest.

At 4-4 in the opening set, Sharapova turned up her level. She rattled off seven of the next eight games to build a commanding 6-4, 5-1 lead and looked to be on her way to a routine victory.

But Halep didn’t go away quietly. She won the next three games to trim the deficit to 4-5, but that was all she was able to muster up, as Sharapova broke in the final game to close out the victory.

“It definitely got really tough,” said Sharapova. “I guess those are the moments you have to get through when you haven’t played in a long time, and against the No. 2 player in the worlds these matches don’t come easy. It definitely showed until the end.”

The win is Sharapova’s 20th victory at the WTA Finals, and moves her to 2-0 in the round-robin stage of this year’s tournament.

Up next for the Russian will be U.S. Open champion Flavia Pennetta.

The Italian won her first match in Singapore with a 7-6(5), 6-4 win over Poland’s Agnieszka Radwanska on Tuesday.

Pennetta fought back from 3-5 down in the opening set and eventually outlasted Radwanska in the tiebreaker. In the second, after having her right foot attended to after a fall, Pennetta secured a key break late to take this match in straight sets.

“I tried to be really focused, tried to hit the ball hard, be aggressive and not give her too much time to do her job,” said Pennetta. “I mean, she plays unbelievable, she can let you run for hours all over the court, so you need to be really aggressive with her. My serve helped me a lot today and helped me play the way I did. Of course, the key was be really near the baseline, not to give up much of the court and take advantage.

It’s my first time in the Finals as a singles player. It’s really nice to play here, the court is nice and the crowd is amazing.”

The win keeps Pennetta’s hopes alive of reaching the semifinals, and she will take on Sharapova in her final round-robin match.

Radwanska will take on Halep next.
