The Queens College women’s tennis team opened up its spring campaign with a victory over the weekend, defeating Merrimack 8-1 on Saturday afternoon.

The Knights got things started with victories in all three doubles flights to secure the doubles point. The singles play then took over for Queens, winning five of the six flights, four of them in straight sets.

The win improves Queens to 10-2 overall. It will return to action against Saint Peters on March 23.

The Queens College men also took on Merrimack on Saturday and won by the exact same score line, 8-1.

The Knights notched wins at two of the three singles flights, and won all six singles contests to roll past the Warriors in a non-league showdown.

The men will next take on Post on Tuesday, March 15.

Columbia Men Fall to Michigan
The Columbia men’s tennis team returned to action for the first time since March 28 on Saturday, and dropped a 4-2 contest to Michigan.

After Michigan opened up a 3-0 advantage, Columbia got themselves back into it with wins from Shawn Hadavi at first singles and Eric Rubin at fourth singles to trim the deficit to 2-3.

But Michigan’s Runhao Mua would clinch the match for the Wolverines, hanging on for a 6-3, 5-7, 7-5 win over Columbia’s Michal Rolski.

The loss drops Columbia to 8-4 this spring, and will head to Texas for three matches this week.

NYU Women Beat Brandeis To Stay Undefeated
The NYU women’s tennis team moved to 4-0 on the spring season as it edged Brandeis 5-4 on Sunday at the Stadium Tennis Center in the Bronx.

The Violets were anchored by its singles play as Carmen Lai, Flyora Shiyanova and Vanessa Scott won at first, second and third singles, respectively to lead the way for NYU.

“The squad responded well to our first real test of the season,” said NYU head coach Horace Choy. “Brandeis has a good team, but we were able to bring out the best in each other.”

NYU returns to action on April 2 against Oberlin College.

The NYU men had two matches this weekend, splitting the pair, defeating Hobart 7-2 on Friday before falling to Brandeis 7-2 on Sunday. It will next take on The College of New Jersey on March 30.
