Columbia Continues Road Trip With Win Over SMU

Columbia men’s tennis continued its Texas road trip on Thursday, defeating Southern Methodist University (SMU) 4-2 to improve to 10-4 on the season.

Columbia would fall behind early as SMU’s Yates Johnson and Hunter Johnson paired up to knock off Shawn Hadavi and Richard Pham 6-2 at the top doubles position. But the Lions responded with victories from Mike Vermeer and Michal Rolski at second doubles and Christopher Grant and Miguel Alda at third doubles to snatch the doubles point.

The Lions would pick up a victory at sixth singles from Michael Rolski to open up a 2-0 lead. But SMU responded with wins at third and fifth singles to tie the match at 2-2.

Victor Pham came up huge for the Lions as he knocked off Nate Lammons 7-5, 6-2 at second singles, and Eric Rubin came back from a set down to beat Markus Kerner 6-7, 6-4, 6-3 at fourth singles to clinch the victory.

Columbia’s next match will be a Saturday afternoon contest against third-ranked Texas Christian University.
