The first professional tennis event in Brooklyn since 1935 will take place this weekend, as John McEnroe, Andy Roddick, James Blake and Jim Courier will play at the Barclays Center in the PowerShares QQQ Cup this Saturday, January 7.

“I’m very excited. I’ve seen the facility as a fan when I went to a Jay-Z concert there, but I haven’t seen exactly what it will look like with the tennis court in there,” said Blake on a media conference call on Tuesday afternoon. “But I’m definitely excited. As a New Yorker, it’s going to be such a fun event. I’m bringing my kids, and it’s going to be one of the first times they get to see me play. It should be a lot of fun.”

The last professional tennis event held in Brooklyn was the 1935 U.S. Pro Tennis Championships which were held at Brooklyn’s Terrace Club. American Bill Tilden captured the title that year.

The event will feature two one-set semifinal matches and a one-set championship match. Blake will face Roddick in one semifinal, while McEnroe will take on Courier in the other semifinal.

“I’m excited to play at the venue. I’ve been there for a concert and a basketball game, so it’s going to be nice to be there as a performer,” said Courier. “I’m going there with the intention of trying to get a win on the board. I haven’t had one yet this year. I’ve lost in a couple finals, so I’m ready to get a win.”

While this is meant to be a fun and entertaining event, there is no doubt all four players will be coming to Brooklyn to win.

“I think we all have sizable egos, and we all want to do well on a big stage like Brooklyn,” said Roddick. “And we all want to show that we can still play a little bit.”
