Great Britain’s Johanna Konta won her fourth consecutive match in straight-sets on Monday, dispatching Russia’s Ekaterina Makarova 6-1, 6-4 to return to the Australian Open quarterfinals, and setting up a showdown with world number two Serena Williams.

“I was really happy with the level I was able to bring from the very beginning,” said Konta. “I think, because of the way I played from the start, I made it difficult for her to get into the match. I don’t think she did much wrong, but I think I made it difficult for her at the beginning.”

Konta was sharp from the beginning, breaking Makarova in the match’s second game on her way to winning the opener 6-1, hitting 11 winners and converting two break points.

Makarova converted the first break point of the second set to help build a 4-1 lead, but Konta rallied to win the next five games, advancing in one hour and eight minutes.

Konta, who reached the semifinals here a year ago, will have to get past Serena Williams to return to the final four. Serena fought off a stiff challenge from Barbora Strycova, beating the Czech 7-5, 6-4 to reach her 10th consecutive Grand Slam quarterfinal.

“She’s hard to read, she’s scrappy, gets a lot of balls back. She definitely plays a different game than the other three players I played before,” Serena said of Strycova. “It gave me a different look; it was interesting.”

Serena and Konta have never played one another before.

“I don’t think Serena Williams needs an introduction with everything that she’s achieved in this sport and continues to do so,” Konta said of Serena. “I’m really looking forward to the challenge, and I’m looking forward to being on court with her and competing against her.”

Last year’s U.S. Open finalist Karolina Pliskova dispatched 22nd seed Australian Daria Gavrilova 6-3, 6-3 to reach the quarterfinals.

“I’m definitely happy about this because the match I played against Ostapenko took up a lot of my energy,” said Pliskova. “I felt a little bit tired yesterday, even today too. [I’m] definitely happy to be through in this one.”

Pliskova will take on Croatia’s Mirjana Lucic-Baroni, who reached the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam for the first time since 1999 by ending the run of American qualifier Jennifer Brady 6-4, 6-2.

“It feels so much better now. It’s incredible now,” Lucic-Baroni said of being back in a Major quarterfinal. “I mean, back when I was a teenager it was kind of expected of me and it was normal. I won a lot as a junior. Then I won a lot as soon as I started playing pro. It was kind of normal.

It was normal to win tournaments, normal to win big matches and go far. I mean, it was incredible, of course, but it was more normal. But now it’s been so long, it’s extra fun, it’s extra special, for sure.”
