The United States defeated Germany 4-0 in Fed Cup play over the weekend at the Royal Lahaina Resort in Maui, Hawaii, booking a spot in the semifinals.

With two matches wrapped up already, Vandeweghe took on Andrea Petkovic in the third rubber on Sunday.

Early on, Petkovic seemed to be on her way to keeping Germany alive, leading the Australian Open semifinalist 6-3, 4-2 and 40-15 in the seventh game of the second set.

But Vandeweghe stormed back, rattling off 10 straight games despite not feeling well, shocking Petkovic and clinching the victories for the Americans.

“It’s no secret I was feeling like crap out there,” said Vandeweghe. “I definitely needed a big pick-me-up. I definitely fed off the crowd and my teammates.”

The first point for the Americans came on Saturday as Alison Riske outdueled Petkovic in straight sets, and Vandeweghe bolstered the lead with a victory over Julia Goerges.

The play wrapped up with Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Shelby Rogers leading Laure Siegemund and Carina Witthoeft 4-1 before the German duo retired.

The Americans move on to play three-time defending champions Czech Republic in April. The Czech’s edged Spain 3-2 over the weekend.
