St. John’s Men, Women Sweep Georgetown Doubleheader
The St. John’s men’s and women’s tennis team played a doubleheader against Georgetown at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center on Friday, and both Red Storm programs came out victorious.

The men were opening up Big East play and were able to snap a four-match losing streak, beating the Hoyas 4-0 to get back into the win column.

After edging out the three doubles flights to capture the doubles point, St. John’s made quick work of the singles action thanks to Luka Sucevic, Ognejen Trejgut and Alan Nunez Aguilera to clinch the victory.

Following the men’s win, the women edged out Georgetown 4-3.

After taking the doubles point, Jessica Livianu bolstered the Red Storm lead with a 6-0, 6-4 win over Georgetown’s Victoire Saperstein at first singles.

The Hoyas got on the board with a victory at third singles but Anna Morozova won at second singles and Olaya Inclan Solis won at fifth singles to clinch the St. John’s win.

The next day, the women improved to 11-3 on the season by shutting out Bryant in a 7-0 triumph.


Columbia Men, Women Out Non-Conference Play With Wins
The Columbia won for the ninth time in its last 10 matches over the weekend, downing Bryant 7-0 to move to 11-3 on the season.

The Lions took the doubles point by winning the three flights, dropping just six games in the process. Victor Pham pushed the overall lead to 2-0 with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Bryant’s Matt Kuhar at first singles and Columbia never looked back, going on to sweep the final five matches for the resounding shutout victory.

The win closes out Columbia’s non-conference schedule and it will begin Ivy League play against Cornell next weekend.

The Columbia women closed out its non-conference action on Sunday, downing LIU-Brooklyn 6-1 to snap a three-match losing streak.

The Lions were playing its first home match in nearly two months and quickly got on the board by sweeping the three doubles flights.

In singles, Renee Ren beat Isabella Wagener 6-0, 6-1 at fifth singles to bolster the Columbia lead, and Vivian Cheng added to the advantage with a 6-4, 6-0 win at sixth singles. The Lions’ victory was clinched by Alexandra Solovyev, who defeated Anna Grigoryan 6-3, 6-3 in the top singles flight.

Columbia will begin Ivy League action this weekend when it takes on Cornell.


Queens College Men Win ECC Opener; Women Upend Wagner in Season Opener
Queens College men’s tennis team improved to 5-4 on the season, opening up East Coast Conference (ECC) play with a 7-2 win over St. Thomas Aquinas.

The Knights opened things up by winning two of the three doubles flights to gain the early lead. Sharvill Nawghre won the first singles flight 6-2, 6-1 and Queens would also pick up wins at second, third, fourth and sixth singles to roll to the victory.

The women were playing its first match of the soring and took down Wagner College, a Division I program, 6-1 to move to 10-1 overall.

The Knights were led by Reehan Rashad, who was making her debut for Queens College. Rashad won her doubles match and was victorious 6-0, 7-5 in the first singles spot to anchor the team victory.


NYU Men, Women Win on Senior Days
The New York University (NYU) women’s tennis team won two of its three matches over weekend to improve to 10-2 on the year.

It bounced back from an 8-1 defeat to Cal State Northridge on Friday to notch wins on Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday it took down William Smith College 8-1 on Senior Day before rolling to an 8-1 win over University of Rochester the following day.

The NYU men hosted its Senior Day on Sunday and knocked off the University of Rochester 8-1. The day before, the Violets beat Hobart College by the same score.
