Great Britain’s Evans Admits To Failed Drug Test

World number 50 Daniel Evans of Great Britain held a brief press conference on Friday, where he read a prepared statement and took no questions, to announce that he had tested positive for cocaine during a drug test back in April.

“It’s really important you know this was taken out of competition and the contest was completely unrelated to tennis,” said Evans. “I made a mistake and I must face up to it. I do not condone for one second that this was acceptable behavior. I’ve let a lot of people down: my family, my coach, my team, sponsors, British tennis and my fans. I can only deeply apologize from the bottom of my heart.

This has been a sad and humbling experience. I hope you understand that I will not be taking any questions and I would like to thank you for your support in my career, today—for the good and bad times.”

Earlier this year, Evans reached a career high ranking of 41 in the world, and currently sits 50th. He recently pulled out of Eastbourne with a calf injury, and his chances at playing at Wimbledon were in doubt.

There has been no announcement yet on the extent of what his suspension will be.
