World number one Andy Murray withdrew from next week’s Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati on Wednesday, citing a hip injury.

“Unfortunately I won’t be playing in Cincinnati as I continue my recovery,” Murray said on Facebook. “I always enjoy playing there and I look forward to returning next year. I’m continuing to work hard on the court with the aim of being in New York.”

Murray hasn’t played since he was upset by American Sam Querrey in the Wimbledon quarterfinals in early July, missing a lot of time due to that ongoing hip problem.

With his absence, there is a strong chance Murray will no longer be ranked number one when he returns. Rafael Nadal will take over that mantle if he is able to reach the semifinals in Toronto.
