Bulgaria’s Grigor Dimitrov and Spain’s Garbine Muguruza each captured the singles titles at the Western and Southern Open in Cincinnati on Sunday.
Dimitrov captured the first ATP World Tour Masters 1000 title, knocking off Australia’s Nick Kyrgios 6-3, 7-5 to win his third title of the season.
“I’m just happy and I’m humbled to have that trophy in my hands, and especially to win here, my first Masters 1000. It’s just amazing,” said Dimitrov. “I always like this tournament. I have played it quite a few times and always thought this can be maybe one of the first ones, and it is the first one.”
With the victory, Dimitrov moves back into the top 10 of the world rankings, sitting in at number nine. He held serve in 52 of his 53 service games throughout the tournament, not dropping a set along the way, to build a load of confidence heading into the U.S. Open next week:
“Going to the Open, it’s for sure a lot of positivity with it, but the most important thing now is just to stay grounded, keep on doing the same work, believe in myself, and just prepare the best way that I can for the Open.”
In the women’s final on Sunday, Muguruza absolutely dominated world number two Simona Halep, racing to a 6-1, 6-0 victory.
“I think today was my best performance of the tournament, because I felt like I played 20 hours in that that court, you know. I had very long matches,” said Muguruza. “I think I did few little mistakes and my shots were very well-placed and I think I was doing almost everything right there.”
The win gives Muguruza the fifth WTA title of her career, while also denying Halep the number one ranking, as Karolina Pliskova maintains her slight edge over the Romanian for the world’s top spot.
