With poor weather conditions, there was a small slate of matches in New York City on Wednesday afternoon, but two of the city’s top girls highs school teams brought their undefeated records to the courts, as Beacon and Bronx Science met at Roosevelt Island Racquet Club.
And for the third straight year, Bronx Science got the better of Beacon. The Wolverines moved to 6-0 on the season with a 4-1 victory.
Bronx Science played without top singles player Brianna Williams, to expose some of its younger players to top competition, and it proved that it has the depth to make up for that.
Sarah Rahman stepped into the first singles role, and defeated Beacon’s Alexus Gill, 8-1.
Two freshmen then answered the bell for Bronx Science. Perene Wang came up big at second singles, knocking off Aleksandra Bekirova 8-1, and Christina Huynh completed the singles sweep for the Wolverines, downing Michelle Khaimov 8-0 to seal the deal.
At first doubles, freshman Sofie Levine paired up with Cassie Tian to beat Maria Kogarova and Sophia Prudhomme 8-3. Beacon’s point came from the second doubles pair of Andrea and Natasha Osses-Konig, who led 7-5 over Alana Rosenthal and Klara Wichterle, before the match had to be concluded.
"With six extremely talented freshmen, we have the depth to rest Brianna Williams and still manage Beacon's very tough lineup," said Bronx Science head coach Jeff Menaker. "Christina Huynh and Perene Wang are terrific kids. So much fun to be around and they've shown themselves more than capable of winning singles matches against top teams in the region, like Scarsdale and Beacon. Sofie Levine went 14-2 overall last season playing singles. Now she's the anchor of our doubles. Cassie Tian, Rachel Musheyev, Anna Malkov and Brett Zakheim would play singles on most scholastic tennis teams. Alana Rosenthal and Klara Wichterle were in the PSAL doubles final last year. We are now as deep as we are talented at the top."
Both teams will play Eleanor Roosevelt in their next contests.
