Connor Smith Wins $2,000 Space Coast One-On-One Doubles Shootout in Melbourne

With an exciting blend of Live Rockin' Blues and Serve-and-Volley Tennis, Suntree Country Club in Melbourne, Fl. hosted their first annual $2000 One-On-One Doubles Shootout this past Saturday.

One-On-One Doubles tennis is known as the Third Game of Tennis and is played in a Singles format where both players must serve-and-volley on both first and second serves. Half-volleys are permitted. All points are played crosscourt with the alley included. There is a white middle line boundary for all tournament matches.

The six courts of tournament players competed in a two-hour round-robin of short, no-ad sets. The winner of each court and the next two highest games winners qualified for the tournament’s single elimination quarterfinals.

Connor Smith, a native of Tampa, Fl. and former Ohio State University Standout, now ranked top 350 on the ATP World's Doubles rankings, had to win a four-man playoff for to qualify for the quarterfinals.  

Smith then went on to defeat Hunter Reece of Kennessaw, Georgia.  4-2 in the quarterfinals, Matt Seeberger of Redwood City, Ca., 4-1 in the semifinals and then USF's  Grayson Goldin, 4-2, in the final.

Smith netted the tournament's first place prize of $1000.

Seven of the eight quarterfinalists had ATP Tournament playing experience. Jerome Moenter, from Naples, Fl., who won the 2013 USTA National Clay Court Doubles Championship, was another quarterfinalist.

"The One-On-One Doubles Tournament event went great! The event was well attended by our club's membership,” said Paul Davis, Tennis Director at the Suntree Country Club. “They all loved the fast format and seeing all that serve-and-volley tennis. The band and Ed Krass rocked! We want to bring this event back next year!"
