The duo of Jean-Julien Rojer of the Netherlands & Horia Tecau of Romania, seeded 12th, captured the 2017 U.S. Open Doubles Championship, a 6-4, 6-3 win over the 11th-seeded Spanish team of Feliciano Lopez & Marc Lopez Friday afternoon at Arthur Ashe Stadium in just under 90 minutes. The win marked Rojer & Tecau’s second Grand Slam title, having captured the Doubles Title at Wimbledon in 2015.

Spanish teams have been in the U.S. Open final three of last four years, but again fell short of ending a drought that has stretched back to a victory by Sergio Casal & Emilio Sanchez in 1988. In 2016, Pablo Careno Busta, who is a semifinalist this year in the Men’s Singles draw, & Guillermo Garcia-Lopez lost in the finals, and in 2014, it was the team of Marcel Granollers & Marc Lopez who were defeated.

“The key to the whole thing is you need to communicate and be out there and fight together,” said Rojer. “These are pressure-packed situations. That’s a strength of ours. We’ve had a great two weeks. We played well in all the matches and we did so again today. Congratulations to Marc and Feliciano, they are very good friends of ours. They had a great week and they were very deserving. It came down to a few points and it was a very close match.”

Rojer & Tecau, who split $675,000 with their U.S. Open win, got off to a rough start to 2017, but began to turn the tide into their favor with a title win in Dubai, followed by championship win in Geneva and Winston-Salem. The duo’s run in Flushing Meadows was highlighted by wins over defending U.S. Open champs Jamie Murray & Bruno Soares and the top-seeded Henri Kontinen & John Peers in the semifinals.

The win in New York positions Rojer & Tecau to qualify for the Nitto ATP Finals, set for Nov. 12-19 at The O2 in London.
