Soonwoo Kwon upset second-seed Milos Raonic to reach the New York Open quarterfinals on Wednesday night, holding off the Canadian 7-6(4), 6-7(4), 6-4 to notch the biggest win of his career.

“I know I have a good forehand to attack,” Kwon said of his strengths that allowed him to outlast Raonic. “Make first serves first then try to attack balls bouncing in the mid court and hit it anywhere because I have a lot of confidence in my forehand.”

Kwon withstood 33 aces from the former Wimbledon finalist, and secured an early break in the deciding third set to pull off the upset.

In the quarterfinals, Kwon will play the winner of eighth-seed Kyle Edmund and Germany’s Dominik Koepfer.

In Wednesday’s final match, fourth-seeded Frenchman Ugo Humbert rolled past American Marcos Giron 6-1, 6-0. Humbert looks to continue his hot start to 2020 as he will play sixth-seed Miomir Kecmanovic for a spot in the semifinals. Kecmanovic defeated Italian qualifier Paolo Lorenzi 6-3, 6-3 earlier in the day.

American Steve Johnson’s run in singles came to an end on Wednesday as he fell to Italian Andreas Seppi in straight sets, but Johnson paired with Reilly Opelka to defeat Divij Sharan and Artem Sitak 6-3, 6-4 and reach the semifinals of the doubles draw.
