The New York Open first round came to a close on Tuesday night at NYCB LIVE, home of the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum, leaving just 16 players remaining in the singles draw.

The biggest upset on Tuesday came from qualifier Jason Jung, who ousted former champion Kevin Anderson 7-6(6), 6-4 in the final match of the night.

Jung, who reached the quarterfinals here on Long Island last year, now finds himself one win away from being back in the quarterfinals.

Jason Jung moved within one match of reaching the New York Open quarterfinals for a second straight year

“I guess I like these courts,” said Jung. “It’s always nice to get a big win and gives me a little confidence boost, so hopefully I can build on that. I’m just really happy.

Obviously Kevin is coming back, but he’s been in two Grand Slam finals. Great confidence for me and hopefully this translates into 2020…it’s been a long journey for me and I’m just trying to enjoy every moment that I can.”

Jung now faces seventh-seed Cameron Norrie of Great Britain, who defeated Brian Shi, the Harvard sophomore who earned a main draw wild card by way of winning the College Wild Card Playoff last month, 7-5, 6-3.

Despite the loss, Shi, a Long Island native, said he a lot of positives to take away from his experience.

“It felt amazing. Coming on court, as soon as I saw my teammates and my parents, all the nerves went away. The atmosphere was amazing,” said Shi. “I came out swinging, went up an early lead, unfortunately I wasn’t able to keep that lead. I had him in the first I think. Overall, it was such an incredible experience even though I didn’t get the win. Definitely a great learning experience for sure. It’s going to give me way more motivation coming back to school to train harder for next time.”
